“Named after the Norse god of thunder, the majestic Thor Peak features a sheer granite rock face that stretches over four thousand feet toward the sky, making it the greatest vertical drop on earth. Anticipation built feverishly as I flew into Baffin Island, and from the air I saw enormous granite mountains and glaciers as far as the eye could see. Stepping into Auyuittuq National Park, I hiked slowly along the Weasel River, dwarfed by the scale of Akshayuk Pass, the name of this traditional Inuit travel corridor. Crossing the Arctic Circle, numerous rivers and three campsites later, I found myself standing under Thor’s mighty shadow. Days of exploring different views of this mountain followed before I could finally settle down to try and capture Thor on canvas. But how to do justice to this overwhelming landscape on such a small, sixteen inch wide canvas? I knew then that much more work lay ahead of me back at my studio, on a much larger painting.” - Cory
